a letter to "the brothers":

i got it into my head that i really wanted to do something for the boys "from sophia"! i thought it would mean a lot to them and i also thought it may help any transitions needed to not stir up some jealousy! we found kites for a buck at walmart and bought each boy one (owen got batman and aiden got cars). the day before, i decided to write a little letter for joe to read to them, this is what i came up with :
from the beginning, i tried to talk their language! they always say "good morning" to someone when they see them. it's their official greeting no matter what time of day it is. i made it clear that she was aware of them while growing. all i could do was imagine owens face as it was being read!!
well, in the end joe forgot the note anyway, but tried to sum it up for them. i guess it was the thought that counted. they weren't old enough to know the difference anyway! still wanted to document it to remember though!

thankful thursdays 5/19/11

since it's been a few weeks, i've decided to post a couple things i'm thankful for into one week. maybe i'll get better at these thankful thursday postings once baby is here (ha!)...

last week we got to go to a playful place called jelly bean jungle with our good friends, the uttkes. this was prob the last outing we can all squeeze into one car b/c of sophia coming! i was thankful to spend the time with them and thankful that the kids behaved pretty well!! here we are all squeezed into "beauty", our minivan!

a couple weeks ago, i went out with my momma while joe stayed home with the boys. when we got home there was this fantastic rainbow!! who doesn't like rainbows, right?!? i am esp thankful for rainbows in the city, often bringing much needed beauty to an all too often not so pretty place!!

quilting tells a story...here is sophias!

what an awfully hard day yesterday was for me!
i was super emotional [ie: stressed]
about upcoming baby stuff
-crying about things from "i'm a bad mom b/c of not caring for the boys while in hosp"
to "i tried to sanitize our only cups and they melted",
"will i be able to nurse?!", etc.

the dog was hype,
the cat was frisky (and letting the whole neighborhood know it),
the boys were disobedient,
UGH!!!

then, finally, prayer came!
i enjoy prayer lots,
but tonight was extra special!
i pray with one of the craftiest people i know
-seriously!!!
well, she surprised me with a beautiful quilt for little miss sophia.
i am in awe!

she called it a "sampler" quilt,
and even made it from scraps she already had...
how does something so beautiful come from "scraps"?!?

she specifically picked each square,
and i'll label them so you can understand why.
what thought and love was poured into this project!!!

here is the whole shot:

and now in close ups:

butterfly--- hopscotch --- patience corner

corn and beans (for africa) --- baby blocks--- crown of thorns

morning star--- pinwheel --- dove in the window

hosanna!--- philadelphia pavement --- peonies

this is the simple and sweet backing:

i love that it has a square to represent where we're going,
and one for where we come from...
it shows who we are (the christian heritage),
and represents the sweet simplicities of a baby!!!

this to me is what a quilt is,
(tells people who you are or where you come from
-it tells your story)
and I LOVE IT!!!
it's almost like stitching her name into the blanket,
only with pictures instead of letters.

(*sadly, i no longer like the one i made for her, and don't know if i can ever quilt again knowing that i will never be able to produce something like this...
either that, or i still have so much to learn!!!!)

jello jiggly fun

we were recently given jello jiggler abc cutouts
and some boxes of jello & knox to make them...

what fun the boys had eating their names up
and talking about the letters!!

so simple,
you don't need the jello brand abc's to "play",
any cookie cutters will do!!

jello jigglers:
3 boxes of jello (we like sugar free)
1 box knox (4 envelopes)
4 c. boiling water

fridge, "cut", enjoy!!!

marinade

somewhere in the beginning of our marriage,
i found this recipe for a marinade.
it has been used for 6+ years now,
and i have no plans to retire it any time soon.
we used it for our kabobs this week,
and it reminded me how much i enjoy it
(and the kabobs were just so pretty)
so i decided to share:

marinade
5 T. lemon juice
3 T. soy sauce
1/8 t. pepper
1 t. basil
2 cloves garlic

(i also LOVE to add honey when it will work!!)

out of the mouths of babes 5/15/11

oh, it's been TOO long since i've written one of these posts! the worst part, i haven't written many things down either...
here are some tidbits from the past [insert however long it's been]!

owen:
  • "we haven't seen that in years!" or "we haven't done that in years!" (as if he has all these years to spare having not seen/done something!!)
  • seeing an image of lego batman, he assured me one of the men was "toothpaste". surprised 1) that there was such a man and 2) that he knew him, i said okay and went on with life....the next day when i really looked at the man, i realized it was actually two-face
  • always singing a song "i wish you could be my friend!" we have no clue where it is from. i thought it was the veggie tales song, "i can be your friend", but he quickly informed me that was NOT what he was singing!
  • this might be my personal fav, but he is always saying "i love you soooo much!"
  • "cack-pack" for backpack ->there aren't too many of these types of slips anymore as he is getting "so old", so it's super fun when there is one! :)
  • "mommy, am i sooo handsome?" obviously he has one of his daddy's love languages of need of affirmation!!!!
  • "no kidding!"

aiden:
  • shaking his finger at my belly as if to correct it, he in his most stern voice said, "come out fi-fa!" don't know where he heard that before...
  • filled with curiosity! consistently asking, "what's this?" even when he already knows what 'this' is
  • always looking for the easy way, now he stands at stairs with his hands in the air and says "ride!" -with hopes to hitch one up/down.
  • loves to boss people around!! "come here!", "do____ !", "BAAAAD LUCY!", etc.
  • typically 2 with his "no's" to everything! the best is when you actually see him think through what he was just asked and responded no to, but then realizes he wants to say yes! (ie: do you want a snack?)
  • says "dood mornin!" after each sleep (nap or night), usually with a pat on the back as he snuggles in!
  • the ever infamous mommy chant......."mommy?"... "what?"..."mommy?"..."what buddy?"..."mommmmy!"..."aiden, i've said what! what do you need?"..."MOMMY!".......you get the idea (notice i'm stopping before we get to my ugly exasperated response!!)
  • always with the hands on the hips when "commanding" you what to do

a picture is worth...

1,000 words!
here's to remembering all the pictures the kids draw!

just when you think you've got it figured out...

i wish that i had taken some pictures for proof...but that's not the case.

i have spent the last 3 mos or so attempting to puppy proof our house! i have never seen wrath of a dog like this one! she started out really good. we didn't have to kennel her up, she only chewed her toys, she ate her food....

one day, we were leaving for quite a while. i had that "feeling" in my gut and i asked joe, "do you think she'll still be okay?" maybe she knew my lack of trust. we got back and NEW diapers were torn and spread throughout the house. there was one that was in too close proximity to where she decided to pee, and that gel stuff was everywhere!!! there were several things she decided to chew that night, including a wooden giraffe joe had from africa & a really awesome scroll he had from china.

to say the least, she has been kenneled since then every time we go out!!

so there have been more stories like this -"could this be goodbye?!?", the end of the silly monster pillows the boys loved, several pairs of shoes, LOADS of toys...

some you take lightly, others you use as examples as to why we need to be "responsible"!

anyway, her latest trick has been attack of the bathroom. she LOVED taking all the trash and shredding it under the bed. i am 10 mos prego mind you, so getting things from under the bed, NOT MY CURRENT CUP OF TEA!!! i finally train the boys (joe and o) to close the door, but then with the heat it starts to get a little funky smell...you know, it's a bathroom! besides, have you tried to go to the bathroom when the hot steam from a shower has sat there? ugh, you feel like you're swimming and everything is wet. i finally splurge for a mini-trashcan with a pop up lid.

ah! troubles over!

NOT!!!

they've only just begun!

i ran [solo] to target the other night to grab some groceries, etc. target is my store after all! remember this day? i blogged about ALL the stuff i did around the house! by night, i was sore! physically sore and just plain exhausted, but i still went shopping! we needed food! i needed a break from the boys! anyway, i came home and my normal routine is to RUN to the bathroom. doesn't matter that i went at least 2 times while at target, i have to goooo!!! i get upstairs and immediately know she's been at it...

*toilet brush...MIA
*plunger...middle of bath floor and chewed
*shower curtain...tucked up and moved over (she's been in the tub)
*i open the curtain to find the frog belly of toys down and several toys missing, the loofahs shredded, and the shampoo missing -what dog steals a bottle of shampoo?!?
*turn around to investigate more...the toothbrush holder...gone! along with all the toothbrushes but 1 -ironically, aidens! aiden and lucy have a very special bond! was this coincidence?!?

i look under bed for toilet brush and find a nice little chewed up pile! it included the toilet brush, what was left of the toothbrushes, a brand new pack of wipes (which she stole from the basket on the back of the toilet), a few leftover pieces of bath toys, a HUGE bottle of softsoap refill that was spilling, the shampoo (that was also spilling), a brand new roll of toilet paper (which is on a top shelf in a linen closet so HOW DID SHE GET THAT?!?), etc.

needless to say, our bathroom door is closed again!

i wish i could say it was cleaned up with grace, but it was not! i was mad at lucy for being so bad, mad at joe for missing this (how?!?), mad that i was JUST at the store and now had to go buy new toothbrushes if we wanted clean teeth in the am, mad that i was soo sore and had to dig stuff from under the bed and still go downstairs to put the groceries away.....UGH!!! obviously, i'm a little more over it now and it's humorous enough to blog about!!

can't tell you how exciting it was to have to "re-clean" it all in the am (when it came out her other end), but at least it came out in the back yard.....

why do we always get "the bad ones"?!? why do i love her so much still?!?

shockingly, we have worse stories than this from previous dogs! stories that include the destruction of ALL my wedding pictures...

why do we have pets at all?!?

i have never been more ready...

so here i am with a little over a week left,
and i can't freakin wait!!!!

for one, i really wanna meet this little girl already!

second, i am physically exhausted and ready to start feeling human again -which eventually means being able to sleep, bend, eat, exercise, etc.!

lastly, this "nesting" phase has never been seen like this before...atleast for me!

joe said in the beginning he knew i was pregnant b/c i was crazy. (he also said i was more crazy than with the boys, so he knew it was a girl!)

he was right!

i wonder what he's gonna say when he comes home today and sees everything i've done...

i mean, besides the normal get ready for baby stuff you do, and the quilting i did, i also have started another quilt for some friends. can't wait for them to have a baby so i can give it to them!!! (guess i should work on finishing it too if this is a reality)

yesterday, i got the notion to paint the kitchen ceiling. yup! check that off the "honey-do" list!!
(did i mention that both boys were sick yesterday? so i also cared for them, cleaned up several messes & did extra loads of laundry!!)

today? well, this is the first i've really rested all day!!

today i started with lower back pain, loads of pressure & contractions. i've never had contractions mind you, so i was a little taken back. my first thought was "REST!" & that's what i did. not long after they subsided, and then reality sunk in...i am full term! this is okay!

i immediately got to work -thinking i could bring this little girl into the world today!!! i re-painted the bottom half of my dining room and painted the bases that have been needing paint since we last redid the flooring in here (okay, so i only really did about half the dining room b/c i thought it not a good idea to attempt to move the treadmill or the "office" table alone). i did more laundry, including carrying the baskets up/down the stairs (that which i've been trying NOT to do). i also attempted to sand the "hole in the wall'', but our sand paper was bad [guess that's tomorrow's task]. then, the boys were in bed so i headed out back and shoveled. this last task is hard to explain, but if you've seen it (the backyard), you know what i mean. this is a job i've been literally begging joe to do. every week i attempt to coax him into it...usually failing. he has been working on it the last couple weeks, but now it's done!

ha! guess her coming today was not the big guy's plan!

i have officially finished joe's "honey-do" list,
i did NOT bring on any more contractions,
i am completely exhausted [and sore],
& i still have to go grocery shopping!!!

it's a good thing i don't have to physically work to get this baby out b/c now i'm so beat, it might never happen!

well, for now i will try to be patient -she is coming afterall! whether it's today or 11 days from now!! most importantly, she is loved all the same!!!

hope my crazy nesting has brought some humor to your life today!

with that, i accidently found a short video about the school we plan to send the children to in rwanda. it was definately fun to watch and recognize some of the people we met!!

the LITERAL hole in the wall

so we had this soft spot on our wall that a few mos ago was "hit" by a visitor and cracked. it was an eye soar for sure!! the other day, the kitten decided she would use it as a new toy, and she did! the wall crumbled leaving a hole in its place...

joe laughed at me and basically said the cat cant make a hole in the wall. i tried to tell him i didn't understand either, but i KNOW the dog, kids and i didn't do it.

as if i don't have enough to do, right?!?

so i find some plaster repair in the basement and much to my surprise, it's still good. i get right to work! it's a thick section, so i know it has to go on in layers, and each time i put on a new layer, the cat tries to remove it. now, not only am i attempting to repair the wall, i have to chase and keep kitty away from it and clean up putty paw marks on the carpet, all while explaining to 2 littles why they can't touch it and child gate-ing to keep the pup away! here is the proof of little claw mark in the fresh layer of putty.....

so, the moral of the story is, cats CAN attack and make holes in the wall!! oh, and if you enter my house and see a half finished project, just be thankful there are no more claw marks in it!!!
