release of rights

i recently found an article we received when we went to candidacy school for africa inland mission. it is called release of rights. it was a reminder to me that i need to constantly think & do this if we're going to survive in rwanda. i decided to blog about it, as a way to "keep" the list, that way if i loose the paper again, i can't say i didn't know. some of the things listed make me laugh, and i think "easy!", but others already seem hard! it's not an extensive list, but you'll get the idea.
it has a gentle reminder in the header of how they [the rights]
"seem reasonable but can cause dissension, and steal from your effectiveness as a witness for jesus"
instead of holding on to these rights, it encourages you to entrust them to god or to
"transfer the responsibility of them to a place of safe keeping."
i like that! i must confess, there are also some things listed here that let me release a huge sigh of relief - a "thank you god for NOT making me responsible for this one!" kind of attitude.

rights we give up:
a comfy bed
having 3 meals a day
having familiar food
dressing fashionably
seeing results
control of ourselves
control of others
control of circumstance
having pleasant circumstance
making decisions
taking offense
being successful
being understood
being heard
being right
we entrust to god:
our strength and endurance
our health and strength
our likes and dislikes of food
our security in him
his purposes and fruit of his timing
our need for his spirit to control
his workmanship in others
our circumstances to his purposes in making us christ like
the privilege of suffering for his sake
his sovereign hand on our life
our deepest needs
our security in his love
our reputation
our need for recognition
our need for his righteousness

as prob anyone who has had conversation with me can testify to, africa is on my mind a lot lately! having reached the year mark (1 year until our goal of being there), makes me think of the sacrafices & joys of it all. there are both!!

Romans 12:1-2

A Living Sacrifice to God
1 And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. 2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
