taking scripture literally

those of you who know me at all, probably have guessed by now that i am a visual person!!! i usually can drive somewhere and know how to get back there b/c of landmarks; i can remember things by picturing them (and sometimes that's the only way); and usually i can meet you once and remember your face for a long LONG time! last weekend i went on a womens retreat and the speaker was a visual teacher! it was great to receive a little "gift" for each lesson, b/c it helped me remember the points of each!
anyway, not really dealing with the retreat, but sort of...the woman shared a verse with us in one of the lessons, and i imeadiately pictured it in my mind.

"4 the lord is our god, the lord alone. 5 you must love the lord your god with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. 6 and you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that i am giving you today. 7 repeat them again and again to your children. talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. 8 tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. 9 write them on your doorposts of your house and on your gates. deuteronomy 6:4-9"
while the thought of "tattooing" these words on my forehead brought much humor to me, more realisticly i thought about the write them on your doorposts and the repeat them again and again to your children parts.
as a mom, and the general care taker of the boys, i often struggle with thoughts of "not teaching them enough". things that are good for the body (basic hygiene, etc.), things that are good for life (manners, cleaning, etc.), but most importantly things that are good for their souls (jesus dying on the cross for sins, etc.). when i saw those verses i just kept reading them over and over!
it's even easier to teach them verses about behavior (and that help me out in the long run):

"children obey your mommies and daddies, for it is good"
"in everything you do, do it without whining and complaining..."
"love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, self-control"
i am sad that i haven't taught them deeper verses! ones like these deuteronomy ones! today, i wrote them on our doorpost (well, just verses 4 & 5). not only is it good for us [adults] to read DAILY and remember, but it helps to give that visual aide to remind me to teach my boys about jesus E*V*E*R*Y*D*A*Y!!! it is just a "rough draft" as my markers were already old, but i will soon buy some new ones and do the finishing touches!

in the mean time, if you have good verses for kids to memorize, feel free to comment them!
